English as an Additional Language (EAL) immersion programme
NWIS is an international school, where students from varied backgrounds are welcome. The aim of our school is to equip all our students with skills to succeed both in school and in their future lives, so we have devised a programme to give all our students the skills to access the curriculum taught in English.
This programme is designed to give students an immersive experience into the use of English for academic purposes. The objective is to scaffold the learning of English and to narrow the gap with their peers in their English proficiency.
Resources:
The student enjoys personalised support by an EAL fully qualified and experienced teacher. The main subject or homeroom teacher works very closely with the EAL teacher to ensure that both are working on the same material.
Format:
The sessions are a total 5 hours per week, which are divided into the following:
- 3 sessions integrated in the classroom, where the EAL teacher ensures the student is engaged with content.
- 2 sessions pull-out of the classroom, where the student works one-to-one with the EAL teacher to build communication strategies putting the focus on speaking and writing skills.
