Curriculum

At NWIS we deliver an international curriculum from KG to Grade 10. Our students acquire knowledge and skills as expected in a school accredited to deliver the Cambridge International.

Kindergarden and Early Years

We have whole areas devoted to learners in this stage of development, where our youngest learners develop a strong sense of self and purpose.

Our schemes of work for the early years are designed to develop the routines and set the foundations for a well-paced learning journey. Our young learners learn by playing, feel secure in a happy and nurturing environment surrounded by highly committed teachers and learning assistants.

As part of our experiences programme for our KG learners, they also go to the various purpose-built sections of the school: they carry experiments in the laboratories, they participate in reading workshops with families in the library and they get busy creating in the arts room,

Primary School

Our students in Grades 1 to Grade 5 enjoy a model of pedagogy that combines a sturdy curriculum, the Cambridge International for Primary, with a skills-building framework. Our homeroom teachers develop units of inquiry where subjects connect to the same topic to enhance transfer and critical thinking.

Our students develop the ability to generate appropriate and poignant questions to guide their inquiry. This work is carefully planned by the teaching team, enhancing the students learning experiences thanks to a concerted effort to build bridges between the homeroom teachers and the specialist teachers. So, Music, PE or Spanish teachers are able to engage in the main focus of the unit, tapping into the concepts and content explored in the different units throughout the year.

All our students in Primary visit the Learning Centre on a weekly basis. This space includes our Library and the Audiovisual corner, where they research on the topics proposed by their teachers. This Centre boasts resources in English, Arabic and Spanish.

Lower Middle School

From Grade 6 to Grade 8 our students follow the framework of Cambridge International curriculum, providing a broad and balanced education for our students, helping them to thrive throughout their schooling. Our comprehensive programme includes core subjects like Arabic, English, Mathematics and Integrated Sciences, and we are the only school in Muscat incorporating Spanish as a mandatory subject for all students up to Grade 8. part of our PE skills for life offer is swimming in our Olympic-sized pool. Our carefully selected subject range provides our students with plenty of opportunities to develop creativity, expression and wellbeing in a variety of ways.

We place rigour and accountability at the centre of our practice, our students sit the check-point examinations to provide us with data on our progress and the areas of future growth. The subjects being English, Mathematics and Sciences.

Our students also learn the subjects as per the Ministry of Education requirements for each grade level. We are proud to enter in various competitions for Islamic studies and all of our students learn Arabic, be it as a first language or as second language, as part of our cultural heritage pillar.

The Cambridge content is structured around a carefully sequenced skills framework. Our highly trained teachers provide our students with the thinking, social and creative skills necessary to seize opportunities in the future of work.

We also nurture our students’ wellbeing and provide them with a planned series of sessions to explore areas selected to equip them with the tools to face the world fully informed. These sessions include cyber-safety, mindfulness, healthy living or nutrition & restorative sleep.

The IGCSE was created more than 30 years ago to meet the needs of students located in different parts of the world but with a common goal: to acquire knowledge and skills fit for a global citizen. Today, IGCSE is the world’s most popular international qualification for 14 to 16 year olds with a truly international programme, giving students more options than any other international qualification. We have created a diverse and rich offer range of optional subjects for our student, this means more subjects to choose from, more ways to learn and more ways to succeed.

IGCSE subjects chosen by our students include Arabic First Language, Arts and Design, Biology, Business Studies, Economics, English First Language, English Second Language, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Physical Education or Spanish Foreign Language.

Our methodology is inquiry based and stems from an active pedagogy, immersing the students in the content by means of practical approaches to learning. Our learning spaces are purpose built to enhance learning by doing as an approach. We at NWIS stongly believe that our youngsters need to develop pragmatic attitudes and a balanced set of skills to ensure a successful academic and professional careers.
